2020 Photo-Review

Tourism and Coronavirus don’t necessarily mix well. As a result, 2020 was a “different” kind of year here in the Last Frontier. Thanks to our local following along with many determined guests from the lower 48 – while the world was in a state of chaos, we had a great season and had lots of fun along the way! I want to extend a personal THANK YOU to all the wonderful guests that chose to brave the travel process to get to us. I think most or all of them would tell you they’re extremely glad they did, as the outdoors & fishing have a way of clearing your head and making you feel better about the world…

We really hope you enjoy this photo review of the amazing 2020 fishing season that we had here on the Kenai Peninsula! We are truly blessed with a wonderful location, amazing fisheries, and by far the best clientele in Alaska 🙂

.

As always, we start the season in May with the hatchery king salmon run on the Kasilof River primarily. The early part of this run was incredible, probably the best we’ve seen in years! When bait was restricted in mid-June we were forced to improvise, but the action was absolutely amazing while it lasted!
Our early season also includes halibut fishing and some fly out fishing with bear viewing. 2020 was spectacular for both of these fisheries. Halibut provided fast limits with some REAL nice fish mixed in, and the fly-out trips were great as always with fishing and scenery coming through on virtually every trip!
By the time July came around we were knee deep in sockeye salmon. Both the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers had great fishing, as you can see, if you knew when and where to go!
July also brought with it the second run of king salmon… BIG king salmon! Although the overall numbers weren’t real impressive, the water conditions were virtually perfect, which made for some very good fishing for the majority of the month.
King fishing was really, really good all the way up until late July when the fishery closed. The best part about it was that the average size of the kings were extremely nice, and some of the nicest fish we’ve seen in a quite while were landed on our boats in 2020!
Just about anytime throughout the season, a saltwater combo trip is a fantastic way for our guests to fill the freezer. We can get you set up with a great saltwater trip out of Homer, Ninilchik, or Seward. Ask us about the pros of each and we’ll hook you up!
Late summer & early fall can be some of the most productive fishing of the entire year. Silver salmon dominate the action on the rivers and fly out trips, and the saltwater fishing just continues to produce amazing lineups of Alaskan sized halibut! This past season was no exception.
Even years mean silver salmon mixed with lots and LOTS of pink salmon throughout the month of August and beyond. Being able to catch 100-200+ fish every day is something many of our guests will remember about this unique fishery.
Perhaps our favorite aspect of the late fall is the trophy trout fishery that, when it’s on, is as good as it gets in the entire world. A typical September/October trip on the Kenai River includes reeling in some silver salmon for the freezer during the early morning hours, and then catching and releasing rainbow trout and dolly varden for the remainder of the trip. These are without a doubt our guides’ favorite trips, and 2020 certainly didn’t disappoint in this department!

Although 2020 had its obstacles, we did everything within our power to make the very best of the situation. Luckily, here in Alaska it’s not hard to find ways to social distance and stay safe while still enjoying everything offered to us by the last frontier. Thank you to all of our loyal guests that allowed this small business to continue to operate, and even flourish, during such uncertain times. With any luck, we’ll be back to “normal” in 2021, and we hope to see all our client/friends that couldn’t make it this season! We also look forward to meeting and serving many new client/friends in the future….

If you are looking to book for 2021, availability is already somewhat limited for certain dates… especially when it comes to lodging. Please be as proactive as possible and get in touch as soon as you can.
